So far, I am finding that The Odyssey is ok, but it is not one of my favorites. Recently I have been finding the amount of trust that they put in their gods, and how their gods work annoying. I am trying to keep an open mind- but really
1. Why does did Posiedon hate Ulysses before he blinded Polyphemus?
2. Isn't it harsh to kill a whole ship of people, even if they did steal some cows?
Some of the things that happen just seem unnecessarily harsh or wierd, but I am trying to still enjoy it.
It was nice to, in a sense, get the background of a lot of the monsters/things/events mentioned in the Percy Jackson series.
Well, it's good that you try to be open to new books and forms of literature!
ReplyDeleteI also think the gods' moods can be rather volatile - it seems like they either love someone or hate them with a passion!
I read that series! It used to be my favorite, and I remember that reading the Odyssey did help me make sense of a lot of the mythology!
I don't remember Neptune hating Ulysses beforehand, but I'm sure he did at some point, I just wasn't much paying attention. Next, I think Hyperion was mainly mad about the cows dead because he had such perfect numbers with them. They also can't breed, so that's also a bad factor.
ReplyDeleteI saw the movie the Odyssey for a mythology unit and school last year, and apparently Neptune hates Ulysses for this reason:
ReplyDeleteWhen they were all waiting in the big wooden horse to attack Troy, a bunch of the rulers of Troy saw the horse and went to investigate it. One of the rulers was about to look inside the horse, but the horse was right by the shore and Neptune sent a sea monster to eat the guy. So no one checked inside the horse and brought it into Troy and you know the rest. So after all was said and done and the Greeks had won. Ulysses forgot to thank Poseidon, and the god got all worked up about it. Talk about emotional.
